Does UPS Work on Columbus Day? 2026 Holiday Schedule & Shipping Guide

UPS delivery and pickup services are mostly suspended on Columbus Day, while most UPS Store retail locations remain open under modified hours. This federal holiday, observed on the second Monday of October, affects standard UPS shipping operations similarly to other major holidays like Labor Day. Understanding the specific schedule for 2026 is crucial for planning your shipments and managing logistics around this date.

What is the UPS delivery schedule for Columbus Day 2026? Columbus Day is one of the UPS observed holidays, meaning their standard delivery and pickup services are not operational. You should not expect regular UPS Ground, UPS Next Day Air®, or UPS 2nd Day Air® deliveries on Monday, October 12, 2026. Critical air pickup and delivery services for UPS Next Day Air® Early may be available in limited areas, but this is not guaranteed and requires prior confirmation with UPS. It is always best to plan your shipments to avoid this date entirely. For time-sensitive deliveries, consider scheduling them for the business day before the holiday or after.

Can I drop off or pick up a package at a UPS location on Columbus Day? While transportation and delivery services are paused, many UPS Store locations operate on a reduced holiday schedule. These independently owned and operated retail centers often choose to remain open, but their hours are typically shortened. It is essential to check directly with your local UPS Store for their specific Columbus Day hours. You can use the Find a Location tool on ok.com to verify. Note that packages dropped off at a retail location on the holiday will not begin their transit until the next business day.

Are UPS Customer Centers and shipping hubs open on Columbus Day? UPS Customer Centers, which are company-operated facilities distinct from The UPS Store, are generally closed on federal holidays, including Columbus Day. Similarly, major shipping hubs are not processing standard shipments. The following table outlines the typical operational status for 2026:

How should I plan my shipping around the Columbus Day holiday? To avoid delays, review the 2026 UPS holiday schedule published on ok.com well in advance. For deadlines, always consider the last shipping day before the holiday as your effective cutoff. If you require guaranteed delivery during the holiday week, explore UPS Express Critical® options, though these involve premium rates. Furthermore, use online tools for scheduling pickups for the Tuesday following the holiday, as driver routes will be exceptionally busy.

In summary, treat Columbus Day as a standard UPS service holiday. Do not count on regular deliveries or pickups. Confirm the hours of your local UPS Store if you need retail services, and schedule your important shipments for the business day before or after October 12, 2026, to ensure they remain on track. Proactive planning is the most effective strategy for navigating holiday shipping schedules.
