I am currently providing maths coaching, in all senior maths topics. This week I have been working with year 12 students. They are using data which has been processed by logger-pro, to analyse the path of a basketball. This involves finding an empirical estimate for the acceleration due to gravity, and also an expression for the deceleration of a basketball due to air friction. The modelling indicates that pressure drag has virtually no effect on a basketball moving at velocities below 10m/s. Skin friction is the dominant component of air friction. The path of a basketball is not a parabola. The launch angle is smaller than the angle of impact.
