In a real-world test, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup not only matched but significantly exceeded its official 329-mile EPA range estimate, achieving a potential range of up to 383 miles on a single charge with careful driving. This result is surprising for a vehicle with a 212.7-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, knobby 35-inch off-road tires, and a block-like aerodynamic profile. Based on our assessment experience, this demonstrates that driving style and conditions play a monumental role in the real-world efficiency of even the largest electric vehicles.
To maximize efficiency on a 336-mile round trip, the driving strategy was optimized. The Hummer EV's acceleration was set to Relaxed mode, and speed was capped at 70 mph. Using the adaptive cruise control to maintain consistent following distances was key. This system automatically adjusts speed to keep a set distance from the vehicle ahead, reducing unnecessary acceleration and braking.
The results were striking:
This test underscores that conservative highway driving can dramatically improve the range of any EV, even one as powerful as the 1,000-horsepower Hummer.
A second, shorter trip was conducted to simulate more typical usage. The acceleration was set to Normal mode, with no strict speed limits, and the truck carried a family of four and a full load of luggage. Despite the added weight and less conservative driving, the Hummer still impressed.
After 206 miles of mostly highway driving, it averaged 1.6 miles per kWh, which translates to a potential range of 340 miles. While this is lower than the "hyper-mileing" result, it still beats the official EPA rating. It's important to note that efficiency was likely aided by an average speed of 43.2 mph and cooler temperatures (around 64 degrees Fahrenheit). This demonstrates that the Hummer EV pickup can deliver excellent real-world range without requiring a drastic change in driving habits.
A significant advantage for EV owners is the Google Built-In infotainment system. Unlike using smartphone projection through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the native Google Maps application is integrated directly into the vehicle. For the Hummer EV, this unlocks a critical feature: EV trip planning with integrated charging stops.
When plotting a long route, the system automatically calculates where and for how long you need to charge, providing a total trip time estimate. It also labels charging stations as "fast" or "very fast" (150 kW or more). This built-in functionality, similar to systems found in Teslas, significantly reduces range anxiety by having the vehicle itself manage the logistics of a long journey. It's worth noting that this feature requires an active data subscription after an initial free trial period.
The Hummer EV features an 800-volt electrical architecture, which allows for very high-speed DC fast charging. GMC claims the truck can add nearly 100 miles of range in about 12 minutes under ideal conditions.
In a real-world charging session:
However, the session also highlighted a common issue with public charging networks; a fault at 96% stopped the session prematurely. At home on a Level 2 charger, adding a full charge from 15% to 100% took nearly 21 hours, which is expected given the massive battery size.
The GMC Hummer EV Pickup is a showcase of technology that proves extreme capability and surprising efficiency can coexist. For early adopters seeking a vehicle that combines supercar-like acceleration, serious off-road prowess, and a usable real-world range, the Hummer EV delivers a unique and compelling experience. Its advanced features, like four-wheel steering for a tight turning circle and a remarkably comfortable ride, make it surprisingly livable for its size.
The practical insights gained from this experience bode well for General Motors' future electric vehicles based on the same Ultium platform. The efficiency and charging capabilities demonstrated here, when applied to smaller, more aerodynamic models like the upcoming Chevrolet Equinox EV, promise to make EVs accessible and practical for a much broader audience.
